Invitation International Conference of the “Bürgerhaushalt” Network for Participatory Budgeting on 26./27.11.2018 in Berlin

Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Networkers,

On 26/27 November 2018 the community will meet again! The “Bürgerhaushalt” network for participatory budgeting, represented by its cooperation partners the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb – Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung), the Service Agency Communities in One World (Servicestelle Kommunen in der Einen Welt) at Engagement Global, and the National Network for Civil Society in Germany (BBE – Bundesnetzwerk Bürgerschaftliches Engagement), invites you to attend this year’s network conference, which will have an even greater international flair than before.

We have chosen a special location. The conference will be held at Kalkscheune in Berlin-Mitte, next to Friedrichstadt Palace (Friedrichstadt-Palast) and only a few minutes from the Museum Island (Museumsinsel).

On these two days we wish to exploit the collective expertise of our speakers to examine the present situation in the participatory budgeting movement. In interactive workshops, panel discussions, and using inspiring examples from national and international practice, we want to work together with you to achieve a realistic evaluation of the current environment and discuss the conditions that are necessary for successful participatory budgeting as a tool of civic involvement. The issue of why participatory budgeting can fail, and outlining the concrete reasons behind this, cannot be ignored either.

We are especially concerned about the future of rural areas. What differences can be detected between rural regions and urban, built-up areas with respect to the aspects of activation and civic involvement? This is a question that we will discuss, together with the significance of participatory budgeting for democratic communities. Topics will also include the future and further orientation of the “Bürgerhaushalt” network 15 years after its establishment.

In order to allow sufficient time for communication and social functions, we would like to invite you to join us on the evening before the conference starts, on 25 November 2018, for an evening meal at Café Einstein Unter den Linden, where we will meet together for some good discussions in preparation for the conference, with a dinner speech and tasty food.

The network conference is free of charge. Accommodation (2 nights in ParkInn Hotel at Alexanderplatz) and travel costs will also be paid by us. The event location is accessible for wheelchair users. We anticipate that the event will be simultaneously interpreted into English, French and Spanish.

Please find enclosed the following documents:

•             Conference agenda (provisional);

Please tell us by 03 November 2018 whether you will be attending the network conference, and send your registration to Dominik Schlotter (BBE) at dominik.schlotter@b-b-e.de. In order to help with planning, please also tell us whether you will be joining us at the restaurant on the evening before the event.

We are very much looking forward to the conference, and it would give us great pleasure to see you there! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Best regards,
