The Network

The German Participatory Budgeting Network was launched by the Service Agency Communities in One World in 2003, and is now run jointly by the Service Agency and Germany’s Federal Agency for Civic Education. The network currently has approximately 300 members, and is available to German municipalities, interested civil society actors and researchers as a platform for information and exchange.

The network aims to support the work of practitioners and anyone else interested in participatory budgeting (PB) by providing them with relevant information, and enabling them to exchange ideas on specific questions of how to plan and implement PB. It also aims to facilitate sharing and exchange between practitioners and researchers.

The key instruments for this exchange of experiences, information sharing and networking among members are the annual network meetings, and the web portal buergerhaushalt.org. This Internet portal was created in 2007 at the request of network members.
