With researchers from Germany, USA, Croatia, Argentina and Kenya

Thousands of municipalities, schools and other institutions around the world have used participatory budgeting to give citizens the opportunity to decide how to spend a portion of the public budget. Participatory budgeting is more than just a budget allocation tool - it can change people's relationship with politics and government and increase their interest in political participation.

A growing body of research has documented these effects and their underlying conditions. These research findings can support the implementation and improvement of PB and provide evidence-based solutions to current challenges. They can also help civil society actors to promote more effective and equitable participatory budgeting.

In the seminar, conducted by the People Powered University, leading scholars from five countries present key findings on the effects of PB on civil society and political participation. They provide guidance on how participatory budgeting could increase voter turnout internationally, promote the participation of marginalized groups, and increase the number of civil society organizations.

Invited speakers are Carolin Hagelskamp (Germany), Celina Su (USA), Alisa Aliti Vlasic (Croatia), Manuela Maunier (Argentina) and Eliza Meriabe (Kenya). The seminar will be moderated by José María Marín. The conversation will be conducted in English and simultaneously translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese, German.
